I started writing something awhile back – and to be honest who knows if it will be something I pursue, but I figure why not push it up on the web… It needs some work, you know like something more elaborate than just dialogue but it was the premise for a game. Recently I have been thinking of shifting it to be more of just some fantasy writing – something absurdist, character driven. Who knows.
“What can I get you?” asked the bartender.
“Wha?” the man looks around, lost, he struggles to remember where he is and what he’s doing here or even who he really is.
He looks around trying to take in his surroundings. The bar is actually in an open area of an outdoor bazaar type of area. It appears pretty run down in general and there really isn’t anyone around. He turns back to the bartender “Where am I?”.
“That’s a solid question, let me get you a drink” The bartender turns and begins to prepare some odd concoction.
“I’m not sure I need a drink right now”
“Oh you will”
The bartender hands you a small drink with a tiny floating duck.
“What the heck is this?”
“Kidding, it’s just a martini”
“What’s with the duck?”
“Always liked ducks….”
“Sure…. so yeah, where am I?”
“Like I said, solid question”
“Oh I have no idea really”
“You don’t know where this is?”
“Not a clue”
“And this doesn’t bother you?”
“Why are you serving drinks if you don’t even know where you are?”
“Seemed like the thing to do at the time”
“Has anyone ever told you that you are rather strange?”
“It’s been awhile, of course you are the first person to come through in some time.”
“You know, through that…”
The bartender points at the giant swirling blue portal over to the side. Grasping for memory, the man could have sworn it wasn’t there a few moments ago.
“I came through that?!?”
“You don’t see any other magical random portals that would allow you to show up here with no idea of what’s going on, do you?”
“You have a point… not a sane one, but a point”
The bartender shrugs.
“So don’t suppose you know how to get out of here”
“I assume the giant glowing portal you came out of isn’t too appealing to you?”
“I tend to shy away from swirling glowing portals to other dimensions”
“Well then I suppose you’d like another drink then”
“You have a name?”
He stalls struggling to remember. He wanders in thought straining through what he knows but can’t find even the slightest recollection of his past. He couldn’t tell you what he was doing ten minutes ago as sure as he couldn’t tell you his name. Everything seemed out of focus. He snapped back to the present, turning his attention back to the bartender.
“Well then bartender, another round while I try and figure out what to do here”
”Sounds good, just a bit of advice…”
”Don’t ever trust mimes”
